London, 1887. Ezra Pell, a junior clerk at the Whitfield Analytical Bureau, spends his days oiling brass cams and patching torn punch-cards. When a peculiar program arrives in a sealed mahogany box—one that predicts, in steam and perforation, the precise hour of its own annihilation—Ezra must decide whether to feed it into the engine, hide it, or follow its cryptic instructions into the fog-bound underbelly of the city's mechanical aristocracy.
