Tess sits you down beside a warm lamp. "Keepers learn whole books by heart," she says softly. "That way, no one can ever burn our stories away."

She holds out two books. One is red, full of brave heroes. One is green, full of kind animals. Her eyes twinkle. "Which will you keep safe, little one?"
